Hajo Wagner

Chairman of the supervisory board of BESTAR Stahlhandelsgesellschaft Remscheid mbH

Since April 1, 1981, Hans-Joachim (Hajo) Wagner has been the leading head of BESTAR in Remscheid.  The native of Holzminden came to Velbert in 1952 as a five-year-old with his family from Lower Saxony.  He studied business management after his apprenticeship as an industrial salesman.  Through his sporting activities in ping pong, he came to journalism in a side job and made numerous contacts.  He decided to become politically active and took over the presidency of his party in 1977 and committed himself to politics at local and regional levels until 2009.

The year 1981 brought a big change professionally for Hajo Wagner.  Until then, he worked as sales manager for a local industrial radiator company.  He did not miss the chance to steer a company himself, and on April 1, 1981 he took over the position as Managing Director of BESTAR Stahlhandelsgesellschaft Remscheid mbH, which at that time had just 5 employees and had sales of 1.8 million Deutschmark (about 900,000 Euros).

At first BESTAR, founded in 1978, was to ensure the supply of the local sawmill and knife industry.  But under his leadership BESTAR quickly developed into a supraregional steel service center.  Hajo Wagner’s commitment and reliability are also the hallmarks of BESTAR today.  BESTAR is not just a steel trading company.  On the contrary, BESTAR focuses on the individual needs of its customers and their products.  Be it through customer-oriented stock storage, order planning, special dimensions or even the development of special steel grades.

Today, Hajo Wagner is the owner of the BESTAR Group, which has been family-owned since 2006, together with his son Dennis.  BESTAR supplies customers all over the world.  From Australia and New Zealand to Asia, Europe and the Americas, BESTAR is the contact person for steel for manufacturers of industrial tools, saws and knives.

In his spare time, he devotes himself to his family and his favorite Football teams, the SSVg Velbert and Borussia Mönchengladbach.  He likes to spend the colder months with his wife Brigitte on the island of Lanzarote.

Managing Director BESTAR LLC
Managing Director BESTAR STEEL Limited

Dennis Wagner started his career at BESTAR in 1996. After completing his high school diploma he completed an apprenticeship as a banker with a major German bank and subsequently attended university in Essen. Through an internship at the US subsidiary of a German steel group in Detroit in 1994 the idea was born to expand BESTAR’s activities to the American continent.  After completing the internship Dennis Wagner began implementing the American activities. In the summer of 2001 he moved to Atlanta where he founded the subsidiary BESTAR LLC, where he was to become a managing director. Despite geopolitical challenges and economic crises the company grew steadily in the USA and following the example of the German parent company developed into an important steel service center for the tool, sawing and knife industry in North, Central and South America.

In 2007 he also took over the sales management in Asia where BESTAR had been active since the mid-nineties but did not have its own location. In order to improve the service and the expansion of the activities Dennis Wagner founded BESTAR STEEL Limited in Hong Kong in 2010 to better serve customers in the Far East.

Today Dennis Wagner manges the BESTAR Group, which has been family-owned since 2006, together with his father Hans-Joachim (Hajo). BESTAR supplies customers all over the world. From Australia and New Zealand to Asia, Europe and the Americas, BESTAR is the source for steel for manufacturers of industrial tools, saws and knives.

Dennis Wagner is a member of the board of directors of the German-American Chamber of Commerce (AHK) in Atlanta and the German-American Cultural Foundation. In his spare time his attention is with his wife and his two children who share his passion for German soccer team Borussia Mönchengladbach.
